Here is a graphic representation of the phylogenetic analysis which further confirms that Hudsonian Whimbrel and Eurasian Whimbrel are genetically distinct. The researchers used Upland Sandpiper as their outgroup.
The cladogram seems convincing although the sample size is small and geographically limited - it would have been nice to see some Whimbrels from the disjunct Alaskan population included as well as a comparable analysis of informative nuclear DNA sequences.
